19/02/08 (1) - You’re only as good as your last half…
Hull FC’s home fans are a demanding and less than tolerant bunch. They gave their side a good 40 minutes to show them what they could do this season before the boos rang out around the KC. Some of the comments I heard about a perceived lack of effort and ability (that was the main thrust, although the language was at times sprinkled with a little more colour) were true to form but way wide of the mark.
As I said in the audio preview to the match, the side are lacking creativity and direction at present. Tommy Lee did a fair job as a stand in hooker last season, but won’t make the grade as a Super League 7 in my view. Washbrook’s got plenty of class, but isn’t a stand-off. Dykes and Richard Horne were sat in the stands a few seats along from me, which my girlfriend seemed to find more compelling than the action on the paddock.
And this competition is much tougher than most fans appreciate. Quins showed that they’re tough, determined and skilful. Hull will be right back in the mix before the season’s out. But with so many key troops on the easy list, they need a little time. Still, expect a better showing against Wigan on Friday, even without the cavalry.
