I watched the video (or Sky+ recording as I suppose I should call it) of Hull KR’s Cup win over Huddersfield the other day and Brian Noble came up with a bit of coach speak I’d not heard before.
When a Rovers player narrowly avoided being hauled into touch, Nobby told us that he’d done well to “stay on the island”. Utter b*llocks, but I like it.
On a warm day, Noble followed that up with this pearl of wisdom (I swear this was it, verbatim): “there’s nothing like the baking hot sun to raise the temperature”. Interesting angle that I’d not previously considered…
But less than meaningful utterances are by no means the exclusive preserve of rugby league coaches.
With Hull City going for the Premier League I’ll admit to having tuned into their play-off match against Watford at the KC. The Tigers were 2-0 up from the first leg and Chris Kamara, that well known purveyor of nonsense, offered inexperienced viewers a fascinating insight into the mind of a manager by revealing that Phil Brown would be instructing his players to “remember you’re two goals in front. Then forget it”.
After the game Kammie opined that Bristol City’s players would be “licking their fingers” ahead of the final. Presumably following a strict pre-match diet of KFC bargain buckets then…
