28/05/08 - On the (band) wagon
Congratulations to Hull City on their promotion to the Premier League. No mean achievement.
I’m not sure I would’ve camped outside the KC for tickets, but I was fortunate enough to be given a couple of Club Wembley seats and I’ve gotta say, it was well worth the trip.
Take away the occasion and the game itself was broadly similar to almost every 90 minutes of football - fairly humdrum. But given what was at stake, the magnificence of the setting and the feverish atmosphere generated by both sets of fans, it was impossible not to get swept up in the excitement, not to be drawn in by the tension.
Yep, I took plenty of pride in seeing a proper Hull lad get the winning goal (and what a goal it was!).
Now before I’m accused of being a typical fly by night, bandwagon jumping, glory seeker, let me set the record straight. I may’ve only seen two football matches at the KC (both wholly unmemorable - the opposition and final scores escape me), but as a teenager - in the era of Edwards and Whitehurst, sports casuals and rioting Birmingham City supporters (amongst others) - I was a regular at Boothferry Park as well as The Boulevard. So I’ve earned my Tiger-stripes!
Anyone got a couple of spare season tickets?
